The focus of CUGNet is to allow an open platform for users to experiment with and learn. CUGNet also hosts a variety of community sites, many currently within the Chicago area.

What is offered with an account?

  • CUGNet offers the following services to all members:
  • Shell Account with BASH
  • 50MB Storage
  • Web access via Apache
  • PHP
  • IRSSI for IRC Clients

Whats the History?

CUGNet started in 2001 as a system for the Addison Linux Users Group based out of the DeVry University there. After ALUG collapsed due to lack of membership, the system was opened up to any person who wanted access. Through this the userbase and use of the server flourished until a hacking incident in early 2005 that lead to the shutdown of that system from the DeVry network. When one of the senior officers in charge of the original CUGNet project gained employment at the University of Chicago, CUGNet was reborn with a renewed hope in giving back to the community.

Where is CUGNet Currently Located?

The current CUGNet server is located in downtown Chicago and is hosted via Raqz. We hope to eventually add more servers to help distribute the load and provide redundancy incase of hardware failures.
